Space Ape Games Got Its Swrve On and the Results Are In

Retention was the party theme for the young studio.

Space Ape Games is one of the newest up and coming mobile gaming studios. The U.K. based mobile gaming studio was founded in 2012 and in my blog last week (focused on SoftBank’s push towards mobile gaming domination) Space Ape Games was listed as one of the hot new developers that could be next on SoftBank’s hit list. Despite its success being hitched solely to Samurai Siege the fact that it has millions of downloads is a positive start.

The latest news coming out of the mobile gaming studio is the connection it has with Swrve – a relationship marketing platform. Swrve’s A/B testing program allowed users the opportunity to preview the game’s initial battle prologue (offering 4 different versions) in order to determine which prologue led to higher retention and more spending.

According to Kirsty Styles (via Mobile Marketing) Samurai Siege ultimately was able to grow “day-one retention by five per cent” and convert “non-paid users to spenders” by 3x.

Other gaming companies like Electronic Arts, Gameloft, and Activision all have used Swrve in one way or another. EA’s Sr. Director of Core Product Management even boasts “Swrve has been an excellent partner to EA. Their platform has helped us gain a deeper understanding of our players and improve every aspect of our mobile games.” Mobile gaming isn’t the only genre utilizing these techniques as Facebook recently switched to A/B testing.

A/B testing could become a more integral part of mobile gaming development if other mobile gaming studios travel down this road.
