Battery life is one of the most important factors taken into consideration by consumers when purchasing a new smartphone.  In February and March 2018, Sony Mobile asked Strategy Analytics to independently assess the battery life of its Xperia XZ2 and XZ2 Compact smartphones and compare their performance against leading premium Smartphones.  Based on its independent research, Strategy Analytics proposed Apple iPhone X, Samsung Galaxy S9, LG G6, Huawei P10 and Oppo R11 as the “Leading Premium Smartphones” i.e. the top selling smartphones globally.

Battery performance for all devices was measured by determining the length of time taken to fully discharge the battery under a 'typical user scenario'. Strategy Analytics developed this typical user scenario based on data from its independent consumer usage measuring tools.  The ‘typical user scenario’ specifies using the device for a period of approximately 16 hours over a 24 hour period for a basket of the most common tasks (calling, texting, web browsing, social media, games, camera, music and video).  Additionally, the batteries of all devices were subject to drain by set of common active applications, and by the receipt of a range of alerts across the testing period.  The display brightness on each device was set to 150 Nits and sound volumes were set to maximum.  Other than this, default settings were maintained for all devices.  SA measured the time taken for each device to fail through battery exhaustion. Testing was conducted twice under each scenario and the average time taken to discharge the battery is reported in these results. All tests were conducted in Strategy Analytics’ facility in Milton Keynes, UK.

Under these conditions, Sony’s Xperia XZ2 lasted 36 hours 1 min on average until battery exhaustion. Sony’s Xperia XZ2 Compact lasted 34 hours and 20 minutes on average, in the same scenario.  This performance represents a leading position for Sony’s Xperia XZ2 and XZ2 Compact smartphones against Leading Premium smartphones. The closest competitor smartphone was LG G6 (which lasted for 32 hrs 35 mins on average).  Full details of the results can be seen in this chart.
