Sony’s total global smartphone shipments plunged -64% annually to 0.4 million units. That is the lowest number of smartphones shipped by the company for the last 10 years. Sony’s quarterly smartphone volume is about 30 times smaller than what it used to be at its peak, only about 5 years ago.
Sony is now overly dependent on the home market of Japan, which accounts for about three-quarters of its overall shipments. Even there the company declined -29% YoY in Q1 2020.
Sony continues to miss opportunities to improve its position by taking advantage of the struggles of its competitors, or moving early in the market with new technologies like 5G. Sony is notoriously slow adopting innovations and new trends in the industry.
