OPPO Announced Reno 2 with Video Creation as a Key Differentiator

OPPO unveiled Reno 2 today in Shanghai China, one day before Apple’s iPhone launch. Analysts from Device team participated in the launch event. 

OPPO has moved a step forward in camera performance, and upgraded Reno’s key selling point from photo-taking to video creation. Reno 2 comes with the technologies including hybrid video stabilization, wind-noise reduction, sound focus, and dynamic zooming. We consider this is a wise move for OPPO. Video will be a key use case for smartphones in 5G era and our latest forecast shows that mobile video adoption rate will continue to increase in the next five years from consumer side.

Priced at RMB 2999 (~USD 420) at retail, Reno 2 is positioned as a high-premium model eyeing for OPPO’s global market. When compared with its predecessor, the key strength of Reno 2 lies in its customized rigid OLED display from Samsung, in its 48MP quad camera at rear, and its 8GB+128GB memory size. Its key weakness however is in the chipset side: Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 730 chipset has weakened Reno 2 competitive advantage in high-premium segment especially in hyper-competitive Chinese market.

Looking forward, OPPO claims that it will be the first vendor to carry Qualcomm 7 series 5G chipset and the rumored new model is likely to hit the market in Q4 2019.
