Mobile World Congress (MWC 2019) - From Monday 25th to Thursday 28th February, over 2,400 leading companies and 107,000 attendees will come together at Fira Gran Via and Fira Montjuic to discuss the latest innovations and explore the hottest topics influencing the industry.

As we highlighted, Monday unfolded some of the key IoT themes, such as, connectivity, artificial intelligence & machine learning and smart cities. Tuesday 25th was all about IoT security, edge computing, and IoT for vertical and rural.

Today at MWC 2019, Telefónica and Microsoft Corp. announced a strategic partnership to collaborate on projects to accelerate Telefónica innovation and transform the telecommunications industry. Building on Telefónica and Microsoft’s previous work together around the use of data and Telefónica’s Fourth Platform to power offerings such as Aura, its AI-powered digital assistant, the new agreement will combine the power of Telefónica’s networks, customer proposition and global reach with the Microsoft Azure AI platform to design services telcos will offer in the future. This agreement also strengthened their relationship and common belief that AI technology and the use of data should be based on solid ethical principles and empower people to control their digital lives.

Furthermore, Microsoft and Telefónica will explore working together to identify opportunities using AI and disruptive technologies like blockchain, 5G and edge computing to transform services and build the network of the future. The two companies will collaborate through the creation of a joint working team to explore how AI and machine learning can be applied to optimize its network, reduce costs and, in turn drive industrywide transformation. Together, they would create proof of concepts to demonstrate how these solutions can be used for predictive provisioning, demand capacity and more.

IoT Security was high on the agenda for the exhibitors at the show. Deploying IoT solutions effectively and successfully means deploying them securely. That being said, organizations need to be fully aware of the need to provide data integrity and confidentiality and to be resilient to cyber risks.

End-users have become abundantly aware of the consequences of poor security and the level of digital protection offered by IoT innovations. Organizations – large and small – are starting to recognize that security needs to be a consideration at the very beginning of every IoT project, and we’re likely to see this tenet being highly spoken for at MWC. For instance, Gemalto’s off-the-shelf security services provide IoT device access credential management as well as secure remote updates, while securing the data-to-cloud journey. Days ahead of MWC 2019, Gemalto said that it was launching world’s first 5G SIM to meet operator requirements for the new generation of network deployments which will emerge in 2019.

NanoLock Security¸ a management and security provider for IoT and connected devices¸ today announced that it is collaborating with Micron Technology¸ a memory and storage solutions provider¸ to provide a Flash-to-Cloud management solution for security of IoT and connected devices. The combined solutions enable much richer device-level protection and makes enterprise grade management much more affordable and enable service providers the ability to now trust a broadened ecosystem of IoT devices much sooner while protecting and managing fleets of devices in a much more unified ecosystem.

Amazon Web Services plans to integrate its Cloud Services with Sprint's Curiosity IoT platform to bring actionable intelligence to the network edge. AWS storage and IoT services will now be integrated with Sprint’s distributed and virtualized IoT core network to provide enterprise customers with optimized traffic routing, processing, and storage of IoT data. Leveraging the AWS cloud and the Curiosity IoT native LTE core, enterprises can process IoT data locally, distribute IoT applications, and forward data to the cloud to run analytics and get insights to make better and more accurate decisions for IoT applications and machine learning use cases.

As part of the joint effort, IoT America is creating a first-of-its-kind practice with strategic advisors who are solely focused on helping its customers change the way they work across their entire organization, from implementing location functions such as assets, facilities, field services and safety, to improving R&D, inventory management and back-office systems. Kerlink, a specialist in solutions dedicated to the IoT, and Internet of Things America (IoT America), a U.S. company dedicated to deploying IoT solutions across rural America, today announced they have teamed up to quickly and easily transform the way rural businesses work by maximizing the power, ease-of-use and security the Kerlink platform brings to these businesses through Kerlink stations and core-network software.
