Apple, for an undisclosed amount, has acquired Finnish sleep-tracking company Beddit, known for their between-the-sheets sleep tracking device and associated app software. Beddit's sleep tracker slides underneath the user's sheets and measures sleep quality and quantity via heart rate, breathing, snoring, and environmental factors such as room temperature and humidity. It even allows users to associate certain daily activities with their sleep tracking results, such as a workout, tea, stress, or beer, among many others.
Apple, who has been selling the Beddit sleep tracker in Apple retail stores since 2015, plans to continue operating Beddit as a separate entity and is likely more interested in the intellectual property acquired within the software, rather than the hardware, in order to bring sleep tracking to the Apple Watch. While third-party apps exist, Apple does not currently offer an in-house sleep-tracking app in their Apple Watch repertoire.
Sleep tracking has been long included in
fitness bands from companies such as Jawbone and Garmin, though battery life remains a key challenge of sleep tracking in smartwatches, which often require overnight charging, especially when
including GPS and standalone connectivity.
