Motorola Enriched G Family but US Market is Missing

by Linda Sui | 3月 25, 2021

Motorola formally debuted four new phones under G family : G100, G50, G30 and G10 today. All four new models will enrich the hero G family, which Strategy Analytics tracked generated nearly 70% volume share for the company in 2020.

G100 and G50 are 5G powered, featuring enhanced camera function, battery life and display. G100 is priced at Euro 500 , G50 at Euro 230, G30 at Euro 180 and G10 at Euro 150 (full retail price). G100, G30 and G10 have become available this month in Europe, Latin America and other selective markets. G50 will become available in the following weeks in European markets.

Interestingly US market is missing in the list. This is not the first time. Previously launched G9 series and G 5G series also missed US market. USA still maintains the second largest market for Motorola, after Brazil, with nearly one quarter market share in 2020. While we understand Motorola evaluates different customers demands in different market and determines specific product portfolio, we are still little bit confused about why USA is missing in the list. USA smartphone market went down -11% YoY in 2020 hitting badly by COVID-19. Moreover, consumers demand has been shifting towards more affordable smartphone models in the crisis. Major smartphone vendors dynamics (potential LG withdrawal) would also leave vacuum for low tier segments in USA market this year. Indeed the higher-priced Edge phones and foldable Razr series played a critical role on branding image and pricing / profitability lifting for the company, we recommend Motorola not ignore the mid and low tier segments, which still remain as the butter and bread for many smartphone vendors.
