HMD (Nokia) global handset volumes dropped -4% YoY in Q4 2019, of which the majority were feature phones. Revenue, ASP, and profit also declined sharply in the quarter. HMD remains dangerously exposed to the low-value feature phone market.
In Asia Pacific and Africa, HMD needs to find a way to transition a bigger proportion of its customers from feature phones to smartphones. HMD also needs to redouble its efforts on higher-end smartphones in Western Europe, where the company already has a solid presence.
HMD (Nokia) devices are popular with their use of pure Android, and are often among the first ones to get updates with the latest Android OS versions and security patches. That should resonate well with consumers in Western Europe, especially the ones churning from Huawei because of the lack of Google services.
