Q2 ’19: Huawei: Surge in China, Fall in Overseas

Huawei surprised all and delivered a solid Q2 2019, despite of the mounting pressure from the US ban. With 17% market share, Huawei solidified the second position in global smartphone markets by unit, right after Samsung.

Huawei refreshed its mid-range product portfolio by introducing Honor 20 series and nova 5 series this quarter. Honor 20 series stands out via it quadruple rear camera set-up, and will compete head to head with Xiaomi’s Redmi K20 models. Nova 5 series differentiates via selfie function in low-light environment, will compete with OPPO and vivo for young female segment in offline channel. Nova series and Honor series have lifted up Huawei’s overall revenue and ASP this quarter, in addition to the hero P30 series.

Huawei posted strong a robust growth in China in Q2 2019, driven by the government support, Huawei’s brand power and improved portfolio, aggressive channel motivations, as well as the rising nationalism among Chinese consumers. We expect Huawei will further gain ground during 2H 2019 in home market, at the expense of OPPO, vivo, Xiaomi, and other small vendors. In contrast, Huawei’s outlook in overseas market remains gloomy and cloudy, given the ongoing US-China tension and the rising regulatory uncertainty in major western countries.

Under the big uncertainty around Google Mobile Service, Huawei is widely-expected to launch its own operating system. Huawei is most likely to water-test the new OS in IoT and smart home products and then extend towards other products gradually. It remains unclear whether and when the new OS will be used in smartphone category. If it is to happen, we expect the new OS should be better-positioned to scale up volumes in China under local government’s endorsement. But we remain bearish on its outlook in overseas markets.
