vivo Unveiled NEX Dual Display Version

by Linda Sui | 12月 12, 2018

Chinese smartphone specialist vivo unveiled its innovative model NEX dual display version on Dec 11 in Shanghai, China. Unlike the predecessor NEX model, NEX dual display features two displays, one 6.4 inch AMOLED display on the front and the other 5.5 inch on the back side. The front camera is removed to back side, leaving front bezel-less display with as high as nearly 92% body to screen ratio. The dual displays work separately and allow multiple-tasking. In addition, when take photos, the back display functions as a mirror with pose diction and tips . All three cameras are located on the back display, including one 12MP main camera, 2MP camera and one ToF related camera. The front display features in-display fingerprint sensor, and the back display supports ToF based face ID.

While Russian vendor Yota and some other vendors have launched dual display (one on the front and the other one on the back) before, and Chinese vendor Nubia launched a similar dual display model Nubia X two months ago, we view vivo's NEX dual display as a meaningful innovation and will further enhance vivo's branding image among industry and consumers.

However, dual display would easily impact power performance. Plus, it makes the phone very fragile and case-free, durability would be another major concern.

The model will be available in late Dec in China and gradually extend to Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore etc. in 2019.

While smartphone industry is under hardware innovation hood at this stage, we are expecting more innovative display and form factors to come up in the following quarters.
