Vivo Smartphones Neared Samsung in India in Q4 2020

by Juha Winter | 3月 01, 2021

The last quarter of 2020 saw the Indian smartphone market grow by 14% year-on-year, although decreasing by 16% from the previous quarter. The traditional Diwali festivities taking place in October helped boost the shipment volumes, while a steady decline in COVID-19 cases since the beginning of October helped restore demand for smartphones particularly in offline channels, although online channels still dominated.

Xiaomi still held on strong to its position as the largest vendor in the market, with the market share gap to runner-up Samsung widening, exceeding 10pp in Q4’20 and 7pp for the whole year of 2020. Recent research from Strategy Analytics’ Smartphone Model Tracker (SMT) also noted that Xiaomi had 9 out of the top-15 best-selling smartphones in India as of Q4.

Despite the ongoing consolidation of the smartphone market India both in terms of fewer vendors and fewer models accounting for a larger share of the market, the battle among the top-5 smartphone vendors is far from over. Samsung, for example, fell out of the top-10 model list completely in Q4, its only two models in the top-20 being the Galaxy M01 Core and the A21s. Meanwhile, Chinese Vivo was right on the heels of Samsung, closing the market share gap between the two vendors to just 0.2pp. Vivo had two smartphones models in the top-10 in Q4. With Oppo and its secondary brand Realme also ranking high with several models in India, it looks like the order of the top-5 brands could easily see some changes in the coming quarters.
