Chinese Oppo Smartphones Surfaced in Spain in Q4 2020

by Juha Winter | 2月 26, 2021

Like most of Europe, Spain suffered from an increasing number of COVID-19 infections for much of the final quarter of 2020 before countermeasures such as lockdowns began to improve the situation. As a result, the smartphone market managed to grow in Q4’20 compared to the previous quarter although still diminishing slightly compared to Q4’19. Like in most Western European markets, Apple’s new iPhone 12 line-up did make a prominent entry to market also in Spain, as reported by Strategy Analytics’ Smartphone Model Tracker (SMT) service, although older Apple model such as the iPhone 11 and SE (2020) also featured on the top-10 list.

Even so, it was the Chinese vendor Xiaomi that continued to grow at a record pace, increasingly displacing the struggling Huawei that used to have a very strong position in Spain before it was hit hard by the US technology trade ban. But now, there’s a new player in town and its name is Oppo. Like Xiaomi, Oppo hails from China, and it has been working hard recently to enter the European market. It seems that in Spain, Oppo’s efforts are now bearing fruit, as three models from the vendor (also including its secondary brand Realme) managed to climb onto the top-50 list of best-selling smartphones. After the decline of Huawei and Spain’s own BQ brand of low-end to mid-range smartphones, it appears there’s some more room in the market for decent but affordable smartphones with the latest technology, and Samsung and Xiaomi alone do not cater to every niche there. It appears Oppo is on its way to become a significant mid-tier player in Spain if all goes well.
