Apple iPhone 12 Series Dominated the US Smartphone Market in Q4 2020

by Juha Winter | 2月 09, 2021

According to recent research published by Strategy Analytics’ Smartphone Model Tracker (SMT) service, Apple’s new iPhone 12 series accounted for more than 70% of all iPhone shipments in the United States in the fourth quarter of 2020. What’s more, Apple itself managed to more than double its shipments from the previous quarter, while remaining almost flat (+2%) in year-on-year terms, an impressive feat in a market that decreased YoY in overall shipments in Q4.

Apple’s new 5G-enabled iPhone 12, 12 Pro, and 12 Pro Max along with the previous-generation iPhone 11 were the best-selling devices in the US, marking the beginning of an iPhone upgrade supercycle. The iPhone 12 mini, also with 5G capabilities, did not do quite as well as its bigger siblings. Even so, Apple is the dominant 5G smartphone vendor in the US now, overshadowing the relative success of the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE 5G in Q4’20. Samsung needs to up its game with the new Galaxy S21 series in Q1’21 to be able to fight back.
