Ever since Chinese Oppo established itself as the leading smartphone vendor in Indonesia in Q3 2019, the top-10 list of bestselling smartphones in the country has been populated by a large number or even a majority of Oppo models. Samsung long dominated the market, but most recently in Q1 2020, the major Korean vendor has been surpassed by Xiaomi, another strong Chinese contender in the Indonesian market.
According to recent research from Strategy Analytics’ Smartphone Model Tracker (SMT) service, Oppo had 5 out of 10 bestselling smartphones in Indonesia in the first quarter of 2020, whereas Xiaomi had 4. Samsung rounded out the list with just one model. Oppo’s secondary brand Realme is also a strong player in Indonesia, though the main brand currently has nearly twice its market share. Even so, Realme stand ahead of Vivo, another fast-growing Chinese vendor in Indonesia. Vivo’s Y series, and more recently also other model series, features multiple popular smartphone models in Indonesia. With the Chinese vendors’ strong position, the local vendors like Advan Digital, Evercoss, and Smartfren look increasingly challenged. Even Samsung is struggling to keep up with Oppo and now Xiaomi.
