The iPhone XR was not only the best-selling iPhone (or any smartphone) in the fourth quarter of 2018, the “affordable” one of the trio of new iPhones launched in late 2018 managed to become the bestseller in several big European countries as well, according to recent research from Strategy Analytics’ Smartphone Model Tracker (SMT) service.
In the UK and Germany, for example, the two biggest smartphone markets in Europe, the iPhone XR took the top spot in terms of shipments (sell-in) in Q4’18, before the pricier iPhone Xs Max and Xs. In Germany, in particular, the previous-generation iPhone 8 still remained very popular and had strong shipments. Samsung’s best-sellers in these two countries consisted of the Galaxy S9, the Note 9, and the previous-generation Galaxy S8.
Looking at southern Europe and the major markets there, Italy and Spain in particular, the iPhone XR was popular in those countries, too, but Samsung had a strong position with its mid-range Galaxy J6 (2018) that was challenged by Huawei’s popular P20 Lite.
