Apple and Samsung Smartphone Models Were Best Sellers in Germany in Q1 2017

by Juha Winter | 5月 19, 2017

Germany’s smartphone market, the second largest in Western Europe, grew by +5% YoY in Q1 2017, putting it behind the UK but ahead of France. The market is heavily dominated by just two device vendors, Samsung and Apple, taking 70 percent of the market in terms of shipments. In Q1, Samsung retook the crown from Apple, though just slightly – the top of the list of best-selling smartphones in Germany remains heavily populated by Apple’s iPhone models, according to latest research from Strategy Analytics’ Smartphone Model Tracker (SMT) service. These models include the iPhone 7 / 7 Plus, the iPhone SE, and the iPhone 6s, with even then latter two continuing to sell well. These very same models secured the lead for Apple already in Q4 2016, when Apple also had a clear leading position as the vendor with the largest market share in Germany.

With Samsung, Q1 2017 brought more variation into the model mix. Although the new-generation flagships, the Galaxy S8 and S8+, were not yet shipping, the new higher mid-range models, the A5 (2017) and the A3 (2017) made prominent entries into the top-10 list. Their older 2016 counterparts as well as the more affordable J3 (2016) and J5 (2016) continued to perform well, too.

Huawei, too, is firmly in the top-25 with multiple models, though not quite in the top-10. As for smaller vendors, we see models from Wiko on the overall top-50 list – it would appear that the brand’s success in France is catching on also in Germany.
