Apple iPhone SE 2020 best value iPhone at launch

by Phill Maling | 5月 19, 2020

Last month Apple launched a new version of the popular iPhone SE, replacing the iPhone 8 in their lineup. Global average launch prices across up to 52 countries (where available), converted to EUR (including retail tax) for the iPhone SE 2020 came in approx. 35 EUR lower than the equivalent iPhone 8 models at the end of their lifecycle, but with an upgrade to a key specification.

Strategy Analytics’ PriceTRAX database has tracked smartphone operator and retailer pricing since 2010. iPhone SE 2020’s launch prices stike the middle ground between the original, lower spec'd iPhone SE and the (soon to be) obsolete iPhone 8.

The iPhone SE (2020) launch price range across memory capacity variants was 291€ (64GB Sprint, USA) to 746€ (256GB Makro, South Africa) across 43 of the 52 countries tracked by PriceTRAX. For the original iPhone SE the range was 268-662€, and the iPhone 8’s latest price range was 264-1170€.

The average launch price for the iPhone SE 64GB (2020) was 87€ lower than the original iPhone SE 64GB, and 25€ lower for the 128GB version. The difference from the iPhone 8 pricing was -42€ for 64GB, -20€ for 128GB and -44€ for 256GB.

Key specifications for iPhone SE, iPhone SE (2020) & iPhone 8 from Strategy Analytics’ SpecTRAX database:

The main upgrades against the original iPhone SE were display size (maintaining pixel density) and the selfie camera, with increases in RAM and storage capacity. The biggest improvements were seen with the iPhone SE 2020’s gigabit downlink speed and processor.

The major upgrade against iPhone 8 was the processor (and onboard RAM), at a lower retail price.

The iPhone SE (2020) proves to be an excellent value iPhone, with a well positioned launch price and “more bang for the buck”.
