Australia Smartphone Market Declined by -12% YoY in Q1’22

Australian smartphone market declined by -12% annually in Q1 2022. Sequentially, this decline was to the tune of -8% in the quarter. Detailed estimates by vendors is available here from our Smartphone Country Share Tracker (SCST) Service.

Apple’s leadership in the Australian market continued and was driven by the iPhone 13 series. However, the vendor declined by -21% annually. At 43% market share, Apple was also at its lowest in the last 10 quarters.

Samsung held the second position and managed to grow by 3% annually in the first quarter. It accounted for 30% of the market share in Australia. It was the highest held by it in the market in past seven quarters. Samsung’s Galaxy S 22 series and Foldables portfolio have been finding good traction in the Australian market.

OPPO was the third largest smartphone vendor in the Australian smartphone market and held 7% of the smartphone volumes in Q1 2022. It is the lowest share the vendor has held in over 10 quarters in a row now. The vendor has strong competition from other Chinese vendors.

With a strong play from the top two global vendors in Apple and Samsung, Chinese vendors have had limited progress in the Australian market. Together they garnered over 22% of the smartphone shipments in Q1 2022.
