Taiwanese Acer to Pull the Plug on India Smartphone Market

by Woody Oh | 12月 20, 2016

There are some market indications that Acer, a Taiwanese smartphone maker and one of top 30 smartphone vendor in Q3 2016 according to our smartphone tracker, is highly likely pulling the plug on the smartphone business in India, the third largest smartphone market in the world.

This decision to exit from Indian smartphone market, if proven true, might step from three major reasons, (1) India is getting tougher to sell the smartphone devices due to intensified competition among local vendors, Chinese vendors and established vendors, (2) It would not be easy to generate some healthy margin by selling the affordable smartphones and the majority vendors must live with slim margin for the time being until the scale is guaranteed, and finally (3) Acer might not have adopted the efficient channel strategy in India.

The in-detail smartphone market volume and share by vendor in India can be identified at this HCST India report.
