Samsung Reclaims No.2 in 5G Phones

by Neil Mawston | 5月 10, 2022

New research from SA (here) shows Samsung has once again reclaimed its position as the world's 2nd largest 5G smartphone vendor.

Samsung was no.1 worldwide in 2019, but its crown slipped to 3rd in 2020 as Xiaomi grabbed 2nd place and Apple soared to no.1 at the end of the year.

Things looked bleak in H1 2021, as Xiaomi opened up a huge 7-point lead. Samsung looked down and out...

But Samsung stayed calm, dusted itself down, upgraded its 5G portfolio, and gradually clawed back its losses by the end of H2 2021.

Fast-forward to Q1 2022 and Samsung is now firmly back in 2nd place and has opened up a big 6-point lead over Xiaomi. Samsung is top or near-top in multiple countries worldwide.

Quite a rollercoaster.

But Samsung cannot rest easy. Apple iPhone has 2 times more 5G marketshare worldwide at the moment. Samsung has a long road ahead to close the gap, particularly in mega markets like China and Japan where it trails a big distance behind.
