Recent research (
here) from our
Emerging Techs (EDT) service finds that
5G penetrated more than
one-third of all mobile
phone shipments worldwide for the first time ever in Q3 2021. It is a record high.
That ratio will
top 50% in 2022.
5G phones have been a huge
success during the
Covid pandemic, providing a much-needed boost for the likes of
Qualcomm, MediaTek, Apple, OPPO, and many others since 2019.
Inevitably, as 5G crosses the 50% threshold in the coming quarters, growth will
slow, and industry chatter will turn to possible 5.5G upgrades or next-gen
6G handsets.
