Google this week is unveiling its new
Tensor chip.
Tensor is a custom chip that brings
ambient computing, machine learning and
artificial intelligence to the next wave of 5G handsets.
Tensor is an 8-core, 5nm,
SoC for CPU, GPU, RAM, AI, ML, image co-processor, and Titan M2 security chip. It packs a punch.
Tensor is designed by Google. Tensor is fabbed by
Samsung and perhaps TSMC. Tensor (partly) ditches
Qualcomm.
Tensor will be built into Google's upcoming
Pixel 6 and
6 Pro smartphone
models, due in the US, UK, Japan and 5 other countries in a month or two.
Tensor chip and AI will help to (slightly)
differentiate those new Pixels with maximum Android performance and a
unique processor that is not sold in any other model for now. Tensor beefs up Android. You can expect sharper night photos, faster voice rec, or longer battery life.
It is fascinating to see Google shift into
vertical integration for Pixel 6 in this way. It will be a
premium 5G smartphone with premium Android, premium apps, premium cloud, premium AI, premium ML, and a premium chip. All designed
in-house. All under Google's own
control.
It feels a lot like
iPhone...
Google is the
new Apple.
