On 17.11.2020 at OPPO INNO day 2020 the company showcased one of the most interesting concept phones for a long time, the OPPO X 2021.
The OPPO X 2021 is a rollable smartphone that can resize its display from 6.7 inch to 7.4 inch seamlessly. With a touch of a button, the display resizes itself. OPPO has also included a functionality that automatically resizes the display adapting to the content that is viewed.

OPPO's concept looks a lot similar to the design LG has also patented. OPPO itself has filed 122 patents during the development of the concept device, so we may see a rivalry between these two companies. It will be interesting to see, who brings the device to the market first.
Despite fully functional concept, the device is likely not yet ready for mass market. The structure seems extremely complex and expensive to produce. Strategy Analytics expects that first rollable phones will come to markets in 2022. Volumes will remain tiny as was with first foldable phones, (the first phones will be very expensive), but the sales will pick up eventually.
Just as the world has seen the foldable concepts finally coming to life, se see rollables entering. It will be very interesting to see which of these concepts in going to win in the long run. As always, Strategy Analytics follows the landscape closely and will bring our clients updated information on this and dozens of other subjects.
