Refurbished handset sales growing, but India market largely untapped

by Ken Hyers | 9月 27, 2017

Refurbished handset sales continue to grow, by double-digit percentages year-on-year in 2017. Strategy Analytics’ Emerging Device Strategies practice finds that global sales of refurbished handsets will increase by 11% annually this year, with the most rapid rise in the mega Asia Pacific region. Nevertheless refurbished handset sales as a percentage of total handset sales in Asia Pacific lag other regions, largely due to regulatory barriers that prevent the import of refurbished handsets into India. While refurbished handsets are sold in India, and demand for them in that country is healthy, those devices are largely refurbished in-country. Meanwhile, handsets from other regions, such as iPhones traded in through Apple’s upgrade program, are turned away.

Strategy Analytics’ Global Refurbished Handset report covers the years 2011 through 2022, providing both historic data and forecasts for all six major global regions. It provides volumes and values including wholesale ASP and revenues for refurbished handsets. Clients of our Emerging Device Strategies practice can access the report here.
