Windows on Snapdragon

Microsoft and Qualcomm announced their initiative to bring Windows on Snapdragon in December 2016. Now the fruit of that co-operation is fully functional. Qualcomm together with Microsoft are showcasing the combination of Windows 10 and Snapdragon 835 that already powers many current bestselling flagship smartphones.

Windows on ARM is nothing new itself. Windows RT was Microsoft's attempt to bring Windows to ARM based devices but failed miserably

The new Windows 10 on Snapdragon shows how a company can truly learn from its mistakes. The demonstrations Microsoft and Qualcomm are showing at IFA 2017 clearly show how far we have gone from WinRT days.

The Windows 10 on Snapdragon 835 actually works just like any other PC. The performance in regular office solutions as well as browsing, streaming, etc is no worse than what you can find from basic laptops. Added benefit from the Snapdragon platformis always on connectivity to up to 1Gbps cellular connection speeds.
The new solution does not hinder the performance or functionalities of any Windows application, in fact, you wouldn't even know you are using a Snapdragon based device due the great performance the Snapdragon 835 chipset offers. The combination of Windows 10 and Qualcomm Snapdragon is truly remarkable.

Neither companies have disclosed any future plans, but it is easy to imagine Surface phones with full Win10 aren't far away. After Microsoft has learned from their mistakes with Windows Mobile this could mark the beginning of a new era of Windows based smartphones.

Huawei announces new Kirin 970 with NPU processor

Huawei held a keynote on 2nd of September at IFA 2017. The keynote was the unveiling of the new flagship Kirin 970 processor. Huawei is focusing strongly on AI. The new processor has a new processing unit called Neural Processing Unit  or NPU for short. The processing unit is directly used for all AI related functions and Huawei is already partnering with Google and Facebook to enhance their AI functionalities within Huawei smartphones.

NPU unit can be used to various tasks requiring better processing performance. In addition to NPU Kirin 970 has a new ARM Mali 12 core GPU and dual ISP solution for fast image processing.

Baseband side has worlds first Cat18 LTE modem built in giving 1.2Mbps LTE speed.
The new chipset will become available in the next Mate 10 device. The chipset supports dual 4G connectivity, has dual ISP for better image processing and has 12 core Mali GPU.

The Kirin 970 will be for Huawei devices only as the company has no plans on releasing the chipset 3rd party vendors. Huawei has used significant resources to ensure the software on top of Kirin processors always uses best possible combination of processors to ensure their chipset performs with best possible level without significant heating.

Huawei Mate 10 the will be launches on October 16 will be the first device with the new processor. Mate 10 surely continue the success Huawei has had with Mate 9 devices.
