DJI Inspire 2: Faster Filmaking Drone, Better Cameras

DJI announced this new prosumer drone at the Los Angeles Control/Create Event on Nov 15th. As Strategy Analytics Emerging Device Strategies (EDS) service follows drone market constantly, here is our quick take on the device.

The DJI Inspire 1 was the first filmmaking drone that brought integrated HD video transmission with 360 degree rotating gimbal and 4K camera to the market. Now DJI has launched the second generation model for its popular Inspire series.

Inspire 2 brings tons of improvements to the table. From design perspective Inspire 2 improves in materials by bringing magnalium alloy shell and carbon fiber framing. Both materials are lightweight yet add higher strength.

Other important features include:
- New CineCore 2.0 and integrated DJI CINESSD system, brings better on flight video processing
- Captures 5.2K-resolution video at 4.2Gbps for Adobe CinemaDNG raw videos
- Records 4K-resolution video with a bit rate up to 100Mbps
- Streams video at broadcast standards of 1080i50/720p60
- New propulsion system reaches 50 mph (kph) in 4 seconds
- Max speed of 67 mph (108 kph)
- Max flight time of 23 min
- A dual-battery design using a pair of 98Wh batteries
- Self-heating technology built into the batteries allowing it to fly in temperatures as low as -4°F (-20°C)

 It also includes several sensors and enhanced stereo vision system with built in intelligence for enhanced indoor and outdoor flight:
- Visual Odometry (VO) technology built into its forward and downward stereo vision systems. When combined with data collected by the flight controller, it allows the Inspire 2 to hover accurately when flying indoors or without a satellite signal;
- Forward and downward facing dual stereo vision systems have a sensing field of view of 60° and 54° respectively, allowing the Inspire 2 to sense obstacles up to 30m away;
- The stereo vision system will also calculate the difference in height during auto-landing between the aircraft’s landing point, scanning the terrain in real time to ensure that the area is suitable for landing.

Our forecast shows that total global drone shipments will increase by 248% annually in 2016 and will continue to rapidly rise through 2022. Total global drone shipments include both consumer and enterprise drones but excludes military drones. For both consumer and enterprise drones 2016 has been a breakout year, but consumer drone volumes dwarf enterprise ones. Driving volumes are greater numbers of choices, improving technology, falling prices and clarity in government regulations surrounding drones.
