Huawei Pushes into Europe with P9 Android Phone

by Neil Mawston | 4月 06, 2016

Huawei this week continued its push into Western Europe with the launch (in London) of its high-end P9 and P9 Plus Android phones. Huawei obviously wants to appeal to more-profitable postpaid Europeans with deeper pockets.

The micro-differentiators of the P9 range are its fast Kirin 955 processor, USB-C connectivity and Leica dual-lens camera for better contrast and depth in high-light or low-light photos.

Beyond those three micro-differentiators, we find the P9 and P9 Plus are rather "ho-hum" devices. Their formfactor is "yet another rectangle", while the pricing (around US$550 wholesale) is very high and way above Huawei's normal comfort zone under US$200.

According to our WDS (Devices) service, the expensive P9 range will help Huawei to gain only slight marketshare in Western Europe this year, but Samsung and Apple will need to be on their toes and respond accordingly (e.g. intensive counter-marketing).
