Google Debutes The First Android 5.0 (Lollipop) Phone - Nexus 6

Google debutes the first Android 5.0 (Lollipop) based smartphone - Nexus 6 today. This phablet model comes with 6.0 inch 2K QHD display, 13 megapixel camera, and supports LTE-Advanced (CA) technology powered by Qualcomm snagdragon 805 quad-core processor.

Android 5.0 is the big update since Android 4.0 (ice cream sandwich ) was launched in 2011, with many visual enhancements and user interface changes. Google further shows the ambitious to let Android run among multiple devices, not only on smartphone and tablets, but also on wearables, TV and even cars.

Interestinly Motorola is the manufacturer of Nexus 6, switching from LG which manufatured Nexus 4 and 5 for Google. This move would benefit Chinese OEM Lenovo, which has acquired Motorola and the deal is expecte to close later this year.

Our Handset Country Share Tracker (HCST) services estiamte Google Nexus series phones (Nexus 4, 5, Nexus S, Galaxy Nexus, Nexus One etc.) combined made up less than 1% of global smartphone volume share by Q2 2014. However, Android continue to dominate smartphone market with a record 85% share in Q2 2014.

Top-tier carrier AT&T is expected to carry this phone, being the first Goolge Nexus device for AT&T. The partnership with top-tier operators would help Google / Motorola to ramp up volume in the coming holiday season. Meanwhile, consumers will have more alternative options on big phone portfolio, in addtion to iPhone 6 Plus, Samsung Galaxy Note 4 and LG G3 etc.
