Qualcomm Sets a New Performance Level in Cellular Radio Chipsets

by Chris Taylor | 12月 07, 2018

This week, Qualcomm officially launched the Snapdragon 855, the latest and greatest Qualcomm processor and chipset for flagship smartphones.  The chipset supports 4G at up to 2 Gbps using seven-carrier component carrier aggregation and 4 x 4 downlink MIMO for a total of 20 downlink streams.  With additional chips, it will also support 5G sub-6 GHz and 5G mmW, as well as 802.11ax and 802.11ay Wi-Fi.

Snapdgragon 855 Main Features

The 7 nm CMOS processor itself has much higher performance than the Snapdragon 845, and 25 to 40 percent less power consumption depending on the task.  New features include a slew of image processing capabilities that can make a smartphone (almost) into a DSLR camera, for example high-dynamic range night photos.  The processor also includes enhanced support for artificial intelligence to help improve the ease of use for consumers.  HiSilicon, Samsung LSI, MediaTek and Intel & Apple take note!
