Report Summary:

Many consumers have yet to adopt wearable technology as they are uncertain about what such devices can provide that their smartphone does not. However, consumers find wearables to be quick and convenient to access due to their compact and portable nature. The idea of replacing a product which a consumer already wears on a daily basis (e.g. a bracelet, watch, or glasses), with a device that is smart and provides compelling use cases, is appealing. But, do wearables have the potential to provide practical convincing use cases to strive within the TV/media experience? While several respondents show interest in viewing TV/video content on, controlling the TV with, and mirroring content on the TV, from wearable devices, screen size threatens them from being practical for these use cases. It will be imperative to consider how consumers interact with and navigate such devices. Providing gesture and voice control features on the wearable itself will provide quick operation. Using HMI interaction as well as presence-based technology, additionally provides the opportunity to use wearables as a centralized hub to activate devices and appliances throughout the smart home.
