Mobile gaming is characterized by the ability to ‘pick-up-and-play’. Games which load quickly, have instant play ability, and can be picked up and put down at any time are ‘must-haves’ for gaming on smartphones. While word of mouth or ‘trending’ promotes game discovery, download decisions can be based on as little as the icon displayed next to its application store listing. What is interesting is the download versus deletion rate: only around one in ten games are kept on UK consumers phones. Minimizing memory consumption and regularly updating games with new levels and bugs-fixes, particularly if they are paid-for, will ensure a consumer thinks twice before reaching for the delete button.
