Report Summary:

OECD Mobile Broadband Price Benchmarking Q2 2018 update: 0.5GB for 15days Vs 1GB per month. Simmin Iceland, Pelephone Israel, Orange Luxembourg and T-Mobile Poland all feature at < USD PPP 5.

The Q2 2018 update of the OECD Mobile Broadband Price Benchmarking service is now available for download, and includes over 1,620 mobile broadband tariff plans from 110 providers across 36 countries.

For a lower user requiring 0.5GB of mobile data for 15 days per month, Teligen observed three offers all under USD PPP 5 but with very different speed and data levels. Overall cheapest is Icelandic provider Simmin, with a prepaid plan of 0.5GB at a speed of 500 Mbps, followed by Pelephone in Israel, with a 5GB data, 4 Mbps offering. Orange in Luxembourg is third cheapest, and similar to Pelephone, offers 5GB but at a superfast speed of 150 Mbps.

For a monthly requirement of 1GB, the results shift slightly. Pelephone is now the cheapest, followed by Orange Luxembourg – both with the same offerings for the 0.5 GB/15 day basket. Third cheapest is T-Mobile Poland, with a 1GB/7.2 Mbps plan.

The most expensive offers still come from Canada (Telus for the 0.5GB basket & Rogers for the 1GB basket), Claro in Colombia and Softbank in Japan. The cost for these low use baskets in the most expensive country, Japan, is almost eight times the cost of the cheapest offer

For this update, we have also observed a reduction in number of plans for mobile broadband from Q1 to Q2, from 1670 to 1620 respectively. This is being driven by some operators reducing the number of plans, in particular those targeting lower usage. For example, , Swisscom in Switzerland has decreased its portfolio of offers considerably, and is now focusing on a multi-device plan approach, with its inOne Mobile Data XL plan that includes 30GB per month, for CHF 49.

Since the March 2018 update, the OECD Mobile Broadband Price Benchmarking Service has included the new OECD 2017 baskets, and these are shown in the table below. There is now no distinction between device types, so all baskets can be used with any device. In addition, the usage tiers have been expanded to include a 20GB and a 50GB basket. Further, two short-term usage baskets have been included.

The 2010 baskets are still available within the system.

Historical pricing for the OECD countries over several years is also available. Please contact us for more details.
