Report Summary:

Freesat’s long-expected upgrade to its free-to-air satellite platform, Freetime, is no gamechanger but it should ensure that the service remains competitive for the next few years. Freesat’s decision to avoid Adobe Flash and choose next generation open standards such as HTML5 and HbbTV may appear to conflict with the BBC’s YouView strategy but it is well-founded: only by encouraging and supporting its consumer electronics manufacturing partners to innovate and drive down costs can Freesat expect to continue on its growth path. Humax has done a reasonable job with its first Freetime implementation but the lack of integrated WiFi will not help improve the installation experience and user uptake. This Insight considers the implications of the latest hybrid broadcast/OTT platform to hit the UK’s increasingly competitive digital TV market.
