Research-In-Motion (RIM) used its September 2010 Developer Conference in San Francisco to make a raft of major announcements, all of which will please the developer community. While the most heralded of these was the launch of its new BlackBerry PlayBook tablet with QNX-based BlackBerry Tablet OS, it was the developer focus on platform and content that will prove a lot more interesting than the device only. The announcement of WebWorks, a new development platform that allows web developers to build applications using HTML-5, CSS and JavaScript as well as BlackBerry Enterprise Applications Middleware (BEAM), a development tool for enterprises to enable easier development of enterprise applications, are major announcements that taken in conjunction with the PlayBook, highlight a shift to a multi-platform strategy, support for industry standards and offer scalability, modularity and compatibility.
