iPad and Android Tablets Cannibalize Netbook Market

Report Summary:

The September update of the netbook vendor models and specifications database sees tablet devices included for the first time, with 32 models included, with all specifications, ASPs and price bands.

Despite the hype surrounding the launch of Apple's iPad, covered in the June update of this database, Strategy Analytics research shows that 81% of tablets are running a version of the Android operating system, with the most heralded entrants Dell's Streak and Samsung's Galaxy Tab. As highlighted previously, many OEMs are reviewing their product portfolios to consider where media tablet form factors can be included, which has subsequently resulted in a smaller number of netbook product refreshes than normal, with only 3 new models added. These netbooks, from major OEMs Toshiba and HP (under the Compaq brand), also include Android as the operating system.
