Report Summary:

Mobile health in developing countries is still largely characterized by applications that are neither technically complex nor overly demanding of network capacity, but which are nevertheless very powerful agents for health improvement. Such applications include SMS education and patient reminder services, telephone consultation services, and clinical support systems that use SMS to collect basic data. Services like image-based remote diagnostics that require more capable devices and 2.5/3G networks are beginning to be deployed, however. As their benefits are perceived more broadly we expect the mHealth application mix to shift. mHealth is unlikely to achieve the same traffic volumes as mobile payments, but it will become more bandwidth intensive and will help drive demand for smartphones and tablets.
