Report Summary:

BlackBerry is best known for its iconic mobile devices and highly secure and scalable end-to-end enterprise mobility management (EMM) and communications solutions (such as BBM), but has faced major challenges over recent years, with flagging sales and greater competitive threats in the EMM market prompted by a dramatic shift to BYOD. Despite the well-documented challenges, BlackBerry is sitting on a highly scalable, secure and resilient network operation infrastructure (datacentres) as well as owning one of the leading (and the leader in automotive) embedded operating systems, in QNX. With these capabilities in mind, BlackBerry announced Project Ion at the O’Reilly Solid Conference (May 21-22 2014 in San Francisco). BlackBerry will attempt to use its experience in building secure, connected devices to connect sensors, cars and other objects in a secure fashion to a cloud back-end. Project Ion is a series of initiatives “to help businesses easily connect people, devices and machines, and derive value from these connections”. It will offer the resources necessary to access data from multiple disparate sources and generate meaningful, actionable information using open source and third party analytics tools. This report will analyse the announcement and assess BlackBerry’s real opportunity in IoT in the context of existing vendors in the M2M and IoT space.
