Report Summary:

Smartphone revenues in Q117 were up 4% YoY with 50% of value captured by 9 key models in an elite “Billionaire’s Club” of phones generating wholesale revenues in excess of US$1 Bn. Four of the top models by value in the club were in the US$191-299 price tier, led by the Oppo RS9 Plus. Apple and Samsung have in recent quarters come under mounting pressure from strong Chinese value brands that represent a “smart buy” in markets where conspicuous consumption is losing favor. Indeed, we expect top sellers from Vivo, Oppo and Huawei to start making regular appearances in the exclusive club of vendors with US$1Bn+ selling models in coming quarters.
