The major countries of Europe, Middle East and Africa experienced steady year-on-year handset growth in the fourth quarter of 2011, but the picture varied significantly, with South Africa once more growing rapidly and Spain continuing to lag. While Samsung’s strong and varied handset portfolio ensured another strong quarter, it faced strong competition from Apple -- which launched the iPhone 4S in many European countries in Q4 -- and Nokia -- which showed real strength in Germany, and achieved parity with Samsung in Italy for the first time since Q1. This report tracks quarterly handset shipments and marketshare for 8 major vendors in 7 major countries from 2009 to Q4 2011.
