Report Summary:

While the French mobile handset market improved slightly on the first half of this year, Q3 2011 shipments were still down 17% year-on-year. Among the contributing factors to this fall were: the on-going macroeconomic challenges in Europe, with France among those countries forced to implement public sector cuts; and the poor quarter for Apple due to the delayed iPhone 4S launch. France is one of Apple’s strongest European markets, but Samsung accounted for 40% of all handsets sold there in Q3 2011. The French mobile market is set for a shake-up over the next few quarters with the arrival of a fourth operator – Free Mobile – which has both 3G and 4G licenses. This report tracks handset vendor marketshare at the three major incumbent French operators - Orange, SFR and Bouygues Telecom during Q3 2011.
