Telefonica the world’s fourth largest operator took first steps towards launch of Open Web Devices (OWD) platform to give birth to a potential low-cost web- & cloud-centric devices range as an alternative to growing duopoly of Android and iOS platforms. The operator announced its partnership with Mozilla and Qualcomm to develop these OWD products based on Mozilla’s Boot2Gecko (b2g) platform and Qualcomm’s chipset solutions. Telefonica has taken an early and important step to build new crop of HTML5 based web-centric devices, apps and services offerings and drive the future seamless connected data demand for its Europe and Latin American subscribers spread across 25 countries. However, the HTML5 ecosystem is still nascent and the operator could face numerous challenges to build and drive this initiative. Thus, B2G may not be an Android killer in short-term but a potential candidate for the fourth ecosystem spot to put breaks on Android growth in long-term.
