Report Summary:

With a focus on end users with visual impairments or blindness, exploratory, semi-structured interviews were conducted to examine the accessibility and UX of mainstream technology in the home such as smartphones, smart home devices, and household appliances.

Digital inclusion is important, not just to people who are blind or visually impaired but to the ageing population and those with injuries or illnesses that might affect their ability to access devices and appliances essential for day to day life. It is important that all technology be easy to use and accessible at every stage of life and wellness.

This eye opening report looks at how the sight loss community currently navigates and manages their homes; along with their experiences and pain points in managing home life such as cooking, pet care, security, entertainment, and cleaning. Many are using mainstream smart technologies in addition to conventional devices and appliances to help them with these many aspects of home life. Pain points and work arounds people with sight loss are currently using are discussed. Finally, opportunities for smart home technology to meet these needs and improve digital inclusion are put forward.
