Global game console shipments are expected to shrink to 38 million units this year from more than 45 million units in 2018, representing a 15% decrease year-over-year. Sony has been leading the game console vendor market since 2010, but a resurgent Nintendo will likely take the top spot by the end of 2019. An expected strong holiday season for Nintendo and Sony will further boost their respective calendar 2019 performances. In contrast, Microsoft’s 2019 performance will lag Nintendo and Sony, as Microsoft was unable to secure exclusive gaming rights from top developers and its Xbox hardware pricing strategy was out-of-sync with consumers’ expectations.
This report includes historical data and forecasts for game console shipments, installed base, household penetration, average price and market value by region and country from 2012 to 2024.
