On November 9, 2011, NVIDIA officially announced its quad core Tegra 3 (previously revealed as Kal-El in February 2011) applications processor, claiming to bring even higher performance and lower power consumption to mobile devices such as tablets and superphones than competing products. Tegra 3 will the first quad-core processor to appear in the market, but will be followed during 2012 by a gaggle of competing chipset solutions from Qualcomm, Samsung, Texas Instruments, ST-Ericsson and others. We analyse the unique features of Tegra 3’s architecture and assess the benefits of NVIDIA’s patented Variable Symmetric Multiprocessing approach to the mobile world.
