Report Summary:

On October 7th, the US AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety and the University of Utah released two research reports detailing a series of studies which concluded that certain voice tasks can produce high levels of distraction, and that speech recognition systems in some existing infotainment systems also result in high levels of distraction. While the methodology and implications are certainly questionable, the public discussion is currently being led by such research. The automotive industry needs to take a proactive stand with regards to funding research and working together to achieve objective and implementable guidelines. The AHEAD consortium led by the MIT AgeLab is one such venture, but more industry players need to get involved.
