The car subscription business model dates back to at least 2014, when Cox Automotive launched Flexdrive and Clutch Technologies opened its Clutch Atlanta subscription service. At about the same time, a similar service became established in the Netherlands. Since then, the number of providers — both OEM and third-party — that have launched either pilots or full services has grown rapidly, in the U.S. and abroad.
