OEMs Battle to Comply With Euro-NCAP 5-Star Criteria and CO2 Mandates
Boston, MA - October 12, 2015 - This year’s Frankfurt Motor Show revealed the growing importance for auto makers to deploy ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance System) features, particularly AEBS (Automatic Emergency Braking Systems), and electrified powertrains across more models in their line-ups. Overall there were fewer new vehicle model launches than in previous years, possibly due to competition with other shows throughout the year.
In a new report, Frankfurt Motor Show 2015: ADAS and Electromobility Advance, Strategy Analytics highlights the new product offerings exhibited at the event by vehicle OEMs and key suppliers, and spots the latest trends for the automotive electronics industry.

“The increase in the number of models featuring ADAS has primarily been the result of the recent amendments to the European New Car Assessment Program (Euro-NCAP) criteria for the coveted five-star award,” said Kevin Mak, Senior Analyst for Powertrain, Body, Chassis & Safety at Strategy Analytics. “The criteria suggest that the implementation of AEBS has to be fitted as standard at least on some of a model’s trim levels, helping to ensure the benefits of collision prevention and mitigation enter more vehicles.”
In another development, OEMs, particularly the German luxury auto brands, are having to face up to the challenge being imposed by the tough carbon dioxide emission limits mandated for 2020 and 2021. Although some OEMs have been given some leeway (depending on the average weight of a brand’s vehicles), the 95 g/km limit will still prove challenging, particularly when an auto maker has a line-up predominantly consisting of large sedans and SUVs. It is also reported that the European Union will impose a tougher limit of between 68 and 78 g/km in future legislation for 2025. Mak commented, “As a result of these European mandates, along with similarly tough regimes in other regions, platform strategies have been revised by the German OEMs. This has resulted in more plug-in hybrid models launching at this year’s Show.”
