Should CSPs Follow Masmovil's Lead into The Energy Sector?

by David Kerr | Feb 11, 2021

Masmovil has acquired the controlling stake in gas and electricity company, Energía Colectiva, on its path to become a Multi Service Operator (MSO).

On 8th February 2021 Masmovil, Spain’s fourth largest telecommunications operator, announced it has purchased a controlling stake in Energía Colectiva for an undisclosed sum. Energía Colectiva operates under the brand Lucera and is ‘a 100% renewable energy and gas marketer’ which claims to have the highest levels of customer satisfaction in the retail energy sector.

From a revenue perspective providing both telecommunication and energy services gives Masmovil an opportunity to take a greater wallet share of its customers

Strategy Analytics views Masmovil’s acquisition of a controlling stake Energía Colectiva, as a smart, pragmatic, and incremental move.

Key questions we would like to see answered include:

  • What is the value or utility of individual bundle elements versus a packaged deal?
  • What segments of the market are most interested in bundled offerings?
  • How large are the segments for multiproduct bundles and what are the main drivers of adoption?
  • What promotional and marketing channels should be optimized to gain visibility with potential customers of bundled services?
  • Beyond the always promised stickiness and loyalty, is it worth it for large operators.
