DIRECTV Mobile Application Evaluation

by Chris Schreiner | Aug 05, 2009

In June 2009 Strategy Analytics evaluated the online offerings of Sling Player, Orb and DIRECTV using a computer, and the mobile offerings of Sling Player and Orb in the report ‘Useful and Usable Placeshifting Solutions Raise Value of Digital Media Services’. At the time of evaluation, over a period of three days, no users were able to connect to the DIRECTV mobile application, as the mobile application was down and displayed an error message every time a connection was attempted. Since the evaluation, I have been able to connect and access the DIRECTV mobile application, and found the following: Overall, the DIRECTV mobile iPhone application is a very useful and easy to use application. It allows users to access TV programs and set home digital video recorders to record programs remotely. directv-iphone_home1.jpg The homepage is simple and clear - users can locate programs by name, channel, and date and time. When searching for programs by browsing through channel listings, users can browse by channel name or channel number. After selecting a program, users can set DIRECT to record it to their home DVR. Users are then given a number of options for the recording – which receiver they wish to record to, priority level and duration to keep on the DVR. In conclusion, the DIRECTV mobile iPhone application has a very intuitive and straightforward user interface and provides users with multiple options to locate specific TV programs. All options throughout the application are clear and easy to identify, making the overall experience compelling for users.
