Smartphone Battery Life (First Half of 2017), based on AppOptix Consumer Behavior Data

by User Not Found | Aug 10, 2017

Battery life remains one of the top three purchasing decision factors for smartphones with device OEMs continually pursuing methods for squeezing and extending battery life.

Benchmarking battery life based on real-world consumer behavior is significant for assessing the competitive landscape. Based on the AppOptix mobile consumer panel, which captures battery use data directly from consumer devices, the following figure illustrates the average time for battery drain from 100% to 0% (in minutes) for the top devices. Note: The data below is meant to illustrate battery life times, independent of device use behaviors, such as average minutes of use per day or battery capacity. Normalization against usage factors can be reviewed and analyzed in future reports.

The above data is based on observations from over 1,300 devices, representing approx. 125,000 user days, between Jan 1, 2107 to June 30, 2017.

Key business questions stem from this research, including:

  • What is the usage profile of a device?  (Average daily use, average sessions, etc.)
  • For each of the devices listed, are user’s power/moderate/light users?
  • What apps are most commonly used?

This research data is based off of an opt-in voluntary group of panel members as part of Strategy Analytics AppOptix Consumer Behavior program. To know where your device ranks, please contact Prabhat Agarwal at pagarwal@strategyanalytics.com
